Cubs dump Rusch
The Cubs officially placed Cliff Floyd on their 40-man roster Thursday after releasing left-hander Glendon Rusch.
Rusch, who is owed $3.25 million for 2007, wasn't likely to pitch this year. In September 2006, he was diagnosed with a blood clot in his lungs, and because of the blood-thinning medication he was taking, he knew that pitching in 2007 would be a long shot at best.
Since joining the Cubs in 2004, Rusch, 31, had his ups and downs. In 2004, he went 6-2 with a 3.47 ERA, splitting time as a starter and reliever. In a similar role in 2005, Rusch went 9-8 with a 4.52 ERA.
He opened the 2006 season in the starting rotation, getting the nod in the second game of the campaign, but struggled. By early May, he was relegated to the bullpen. Rusch finished the '06 campaign with a 3-8 mark and a 7.46 ERA, including a 12.09 ERA at Wrigley Field.
The Cubs will have to make another move before putting pitcher Jeff Samardzija on the 40-man roster.
