Cubs Clobber Cards In 11-2 Win
Jeff Samardzija (0-5) left the game just one out shy of earning his first win of the season in the Daytona Cubs 11-2 victory over the Palm Beach Cardinals Monday night at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. The Cubs had five homeruns to pummel the Cards in the win.
The Cubs out hit the Cardinals 15-10, forgetting that the home run derby was Friday night, five of Daytona's hits were solo home runs, three of them in the fifth inning when the Cubs put seven runs on the board.
Tyler Colvin (3-for-4) showed Daytona fans why he was selected to the All-Star team, Colvin reached base every at bat with two home runs and a ground rule double to be named one-of-the-two players of the game.
Jake Muyco received the co-player of the game award along side Colvin by going 3-for-4 on the night as well and smashing his first homerun of the season into the scoreboard. Muyco was also strong defensively, he throw out leadoff batter James Rapoport in a stolen base attempt in the top of the first inning to set the tone early.
Brian Dopirak (2-for-4) and Alan Rick (2-for-4) both added to the slugfest in the fifth inning with a home run each. Alan's shot was his third of the season, while Dopirak has homered in 4 of his last 8 games. Nate Spears (2-for-3) had a triple in the fifth and scored a run to contribute to the Cubs seven runs.
Jeff Samardzija, who finally received the run support from the Cubs needed for his first win of the season, was just one out away when Scott Koerber came in relief in the top of the fourth inning. Koerber's first pitch to Allen Craig caused a ground ball to third baseman Matt Matulia who forced the out at first to end the inning.
Jeff Samardzija did not allow a run on five hits and five walks while striking out just one in four and two-thirds innings in his first start back in the rotation after a brief four-game stint in the bullpen.
Koerber (3-5) earned the win in two and a third innings while not allowing a run on three hits with two walks and a strike out.
Jon Mueller allowed for the Cardinals' only two runs of the game in the top of the eighth inning on a A.J. Van Slyke two-run home run.
The Cubs will take on the Cards again Tuesday night for game two-of-three at "The Jack" at 7:05 p.m.
